Essays on the economics of immigration
Έτος έναρξης:
Public policy towards immigration should be evidence-based in order to make informed decisions that will allow to amplify the positive footprint of immigration in a receiving country and narrow down any negative externalities. The key issues that revolve around the impact of immigration are identified in three areas, namely the impact of immigrants on a country’s economy, their impact on employment and the assimilation process of immigrants and their descendants to identify sources of inequalities. Thus, this project will provide the necessary evidence on the three key abovementioned issues, using novel micro-level data and the current state-of-the-art modelling framework. Our playfield in Greece, which was traditionally a country of emigration, yet, it turned into an immigration country in the early 1990s. Since 2015, Greece turning out to be one of the main gateways for refugees fleeing into Europe from war and conflict zones around the world. In 2021, a multi-ethnic immigrant population of 1,361,720 individuals (Eurostat) is present in Greece accounting for more than 13 percent of the total population. Even more, it is even more imperative to identify the impacts of immigration in Greece, which still has a fragile economy due to the long-lasting economic crisis and its aftermath. Hence, our study will make a significant contribution not only to the academic society but also towards a more effective evidence-based policy making.
